50 years of HEKUMA: German engineering made in Hallbergmoos

As a specialist for high-performance automation in the plastics industry, HEKUMA GmbH has been enriching not only customers with production systems and automation solutions since 1974, but also indirectly end consumers with wet razors, syringes, contact lenses and other consumer goods. In 2021, the company was acquired by the Dürr Group and has since been operating in an even more networked manner in order to be able to offer international customers holistic automation solutions. We took a look behind the scenes.

Innovation and efficiency for mobility, pharma & medtech and consumer goods

Wherever high quality, complex production requirements and high output need to be combined in injection molding and assembly processes, the automation experts at HEKUMA come into play. The company has been creating automation solutions for the plastics industry since 1974. In the mobility, medtech & pharma and consumer goods sectors, HEKUMA GmbH systems are used to produce up to 770 million products a year worldwide. These include pipettes, syringes, connectors for cars as well as parts for electric toothbrushes and razor systems.

The systems are assembled and tested in the HEKUMA production hall before they are delivered to customers.

All of these products actually originate in the halls of HEKUMA GmbH in Hallbergmoos. There, HEKUMA GmbH combines system components, tools, injection molding machines and expertise to create individual automation solutions. “Speed and precision are particularly important in areas such as medtech & pharma. Our customers produce important consumer products for hospitals, doctors’ surgeries and laboratories all over the world. Since the coronavirus pandemic at the latest, awareness of the need to deliver these goods quickly and at short notice has increased. We improve the production processes of manufacturers and supply appropriate solutions so that other companies can meet the rapidly growing demand,” says Markus Schmidt, Managing Director of HEKUMA GmbH.

Distribute, develop, install and maintain through network and expertise

HEKUMA’s success proves it right: the Dürr Group acquired the company in July 2021. As part of the teamtechnik Group within the Group, HEKUMA, together with BBS Automation, Kahle and teamtechnik, forms the “Production Automation” unit of the globally active Group. “We build, distribute and sell automated production systems. The acquisition by the Dürr Group has significantly expanded our network of partner companies. We now have access to more capacities and resources worldwide. This enables us to guarantee our customers fast solutions and excellent maintenance,” says Schmidt.

The requirements since the company was founded have grown steadily and become very diverse. Today, it is enough for a customer to approach HEKUMA GmbH with an idea. “We used to produce CD boxes. Today, our business is geared towards mass production. We implement concepts, supply the injection molding machine and the tool and enable companies of all sizes to automate processes. All they need is an idea of what they want to produce. We supply the corresponding automation solution,” explains Schmidt. The HEKUMA experts first assemble the systems in their own halls in Hallbergmoos. They are then tested there before being shipped to international customers.

Investing in the future: research, development and 15,500 square meters in Hallbergmoos

In order to remain competitive in the future, HEKUMA GmbH is focusing on research and development. “In the long term, we want to be a full-service provider that not only offers the solutions, but also the tools. We are therefore always on the lookout for new talent and opportunities to expand our expertise and business in a meaningful way,” explains Schmidt. One of these investments was the construction of a new company headquarters with 11,000 square meters of production space and 4,500 square meters of office space in the Munich Airport Business Park (MABP) in Hallbergmoos. The building boasts modern production halls, offices, a daycare center in the immediate vicinity and photovoltaic systems on the roof. There are currently 220 employees working at the site near the airport. Schmidt: “Despite working internationally, local roots are very important to us. The construction of our company headquarters in Hallbergmoos was a milestone for us. Since then, we have been working very closely with the community of Hallbergmoos.”

Family-friendly working in Hallbergmoos

The satisfaction of its employees is very important to HEKUMA. At the company headquarters, they have access to a subsidized canteen with lunch, a fitness room, free coffee and other benefits. Schmidt: “Every employee also has the opportunity for further training and to enter the area within the company that interests him or her the most. Here they find the space to develop.” The same applies to mobile working. The company’s policies allow employees to work from anywhere in the world. “Despite our size with 220 employees, we have a family atmosphere in which our employees feel at home,” says Schmidt happily. In September, the company celebrates its 50th anniversary in Hallbergmoos with all its employees and their families. The foundations have been laid for at least another 50 successful years.
