Optima Pharma – Ophthalmology with an eye on the future

Innovative strength, a down-to-earth attitude and future-oriented action need not be mutually exclusive. The proof: Optima Pharmazeutische GmbH, which was founded by Siegfried Kroll in Moosburg in 1984 and is now run by the second generation of the family as an owner-managed, medium-sized company by brothers Stefan and Michael Kroll, received the Bavarian Export Prize in 2015 and is involved in numerous scientific awards in the field of “dry eye” with the German Association of Ophthalmologists and the German Ophthalmological Society.

The reason: The liposomal eye spray “Tears Again” developed by Optima to treat the clinical picture of “dry eye” is unique worldwide in its effect and application and is exported not only throughout Europe, but also internationally, for example to Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

For Managing Director Stefan Kroll, there are very practical reasons why, after more than 30 successful years, the company swapped the north of Freising for its new headquarters in Munich Airport Business Park (MABP) Hallbergmoos in 2017. “The excellent transport links in the immediate vicinity of the highway and Munich Airport make planning and holding meetings with our German and international customers much easier. We have also been able to recruit some new employees for our company here and can rely on the active support of the municipality of Hallbergmoos and the business development department in particular.”

In addition to its core expertise in ophthalmology, the company has long since opened up further fields of activity in the areas of ear, nose and throat medicine and pneumology and has been able to contribute to alleviating particularly obvious symptoms, especially in the difficult coronavirus year of 2020. For example, wearing masks causes what is known as MATA syndrome (mask-associated dry eye) in many people, “which can be treated and alleviated with our products, making wearing masks more bearable.” In addition, several development projects are close to market maturity and the company is looking forward to soon being able to offer new medical products for various indications.

Managing Director Stefan Kroll

Stefan and Michael Kroll always keep an eye not only on their entrepreneurial future, but above all on the future of the planet. “The ecological, economic and social dimensions of sustainability are the guiding principles of our business activities,” says Michael Kroll. In addition to numerous national and international projects, including the planting of thousands of trees, Optima Pharmazeutische GmbH is therefore fully committed to protecting nature and the climate.

Thanks to offsetting its own CO2 footprint, the company has long since achieved TÜV-certified climate neutrality and thus achieved for the future of the earth what it wants to achieve for people with its own medical products: “The preservation and improvement of health with high-quality and innovative products at an affordable price.”
